OK, it's time to stop procrastinating. The weather has been warm enough for golf for nearly two weeks, I've actually played a couple times, and we have most of the plans for 2011 in place. So here it is:
Girls Golf 2011 will again be held at the Oxmoor Valley Academy of Golf. The Academy, with its own driving range, putting green and sand bunkers, seemed to do well for us last year. I'm happy to report that Neil Thompson, Director of Instruction, Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Academy of Golf, will again be our lead instructor; he will be assisted by instructors from Greystone and also from Oxmoor Valley. To our dismay, Brooke has found that running after two small boys is taxing her strength more than she had thought, so she will be only minimally involved this year.
Kickoff for the 2011 Girls Golf season will be Sunday, March 20, at the RTJ Oxmoor Valley clubhouse, beginning at 2:30. There will be an introduction to the 2011 Girls Golf program, followed by a few words from Neil and a reception. Club fitting will be done for girls who need clubs or have a question regarding the length of their clubs. Clubs will also be available for purchase at a discounted price. I know that Sunday is the last day of Spring Break, but come if you can.
Clinics will again be held on Monday afternoons, beginning March 21 and continuing through June 27, at the Oxmoor Valley Academy of Golf. There will be two clinics each afternoon; 5:00-6:00 for advanced girls and 6:00-7:00 for beginning and intermediate level players. If you find that getting to the correct clinic is inconvenient, come to the one that best fits your schedule. Beginning in April, three to four girls will play a few holes on the Short Course each night instead of receiving instruction so they will get a chance to experience actual play.
We plan to have four Play Days in June and July, in addition to the LBGA Girls Golf Championship and luncheon in mid-July. More information will be sent when the dates and courses have been confirmed.
Best of all, for one more year the program fee for the 2011 program is still only $85 per girl!
The Participant Form and tentative 2011 Events Schedule have been posted on our website; go to www.ewgabirmingham.com, click on Links in the upper right corner and then on LPGA-USGA Girls Golf. Be patient, the documents are in .pdf format and can take a long time to come up. The Participant Form is a "fillable" document, meaning you can type in the information before you print it. Note that the Participant Form requires the signature of a parent or guardian in the middle of the page, you will need to sign the document after you print it. You can bring the completed form and a check for $85 per girl made out to "Girls Golf" to Kickoff, or you can mail them to Girls Golf, PO Box 382003, Birmingham 35238. There will be a prize for every girl who has mailed her form and check prior to Kickoff or who turns in her form and check at Kickoff. Or you can bring your completed form and check to the first clinic you attend.
I encourage you to tell your friends about Girls Golf, members of your golf team, your Girl Scout troop, your church group, and anyone you think might be interested in joining us. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Love Beyond "The Day"
“Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love.” -Lao Tzu
I want to challenge you to express your love beyond Valentine's Day. You know the pressure, enthusiasm, and thoughtfulness used to pick out just the right Valentine? I challenge you to utilize that same level of intent to show the people in your life how much they mean to you throughout the remaining days of this year.
Special days that call for a "Hallmark" moment are scattered across the calendar and are no doubt great opportunities to celebrate the people in your life...but why not celebrate the little things...the random things...the everyday, mundane things? Whether its your administrative assistant, your mail carrier, the person at the drive thru window....your parent, child, BFF, sibling or lover...try a few random acts of kindness throughout the year. You'll make a HUGE difference in not only their life, but yours as well.
Why not make every day Valentine's Day!

Quick, Fast, Easy, Inexpensive Ways to Say, "I Love You!"
Still searching for the "perfect" last minute Valentine's Day gift?
Digging deep into the pockets and only pulling out lent?
Here's Sam's Tip for the day...quick, fast, easy, INEXPENSIVE ways to say, "I LOVE YOU!"
For the adult partner:
Digging deep into the pockets and only pulling out lent?
Here's Sam's Tip for the day...quick, fast, easy, INEXPENSIVE ways to say, "I LOVE YOU!"
For the adult partner:
- Spell "I Love You" or another quick message on the fridge with refrigerator magnets.
- Buy a few bags of votive candles from The Dollar Tree (usually about 10/bag) and line the tub with them. Fill the tub with hot water, suds and write love notes or tempting words on the tile wall using bath crayons or heck even lipstick! If you've already received some flowers...snag one and break the pedals off into the water for an extra touch!
- Go to the local grocery store and purchase a dozen helium filled latex balloons (shouldn't be more than .70 cents each) and write a short message or enticing word on each balloon. Release the entire bunch over the bed so the strings hang low or if you have a small foyer, have the balloons waiting at the door. Oooh...you could even release the balloons, one at a time, lining the path from the front door to the bedroom/bathroom/dining room.
- If you are the sentimental one and have old love letters and/or old Valentine's/Anniversary cards, grab your favorite and frame it.
- Purchase a photo box from your local craft store (Hobby Lobby and Michael's always have them in stock, usually in a middle aisle for around $3.00). Most are already decorated, but take it one step further by purchasing a solid colored box and a paint pen (like a black box and a silver pen) and personalize it. Grab a piece of ribbon while you're there (at least 2in wide) and glue it around the box. Fill the box with those old notes, cards, pictures or other treasures that tell your story as a couple.
- Write your lover a note...telling them what they mean to you; why you love them; share your dreams; tell them of your love fantasy; write an acrostic poem using the each letter of their name as the beginning of a new line.
- If things have been a little tense in the relationship, write a letter recalling how you felt when you first laid eyes on each other; when you first kissed; when you first....; when you exchanged vows; on your honeymoon. You never know, this little exercise might reignite a little somethin' somethin'! :)
- More than likely you have to cook dinner anyway...how about making it a little extra special by sitting in the dining room; use a freshly pressed table cloth; pull out the "good" dishes/utensils/glasses; place flowers in the center...maybe do a little "June Clever" on them and put your pearls and pumps on (fellas, get your G. Garvin on...roll up the sleeves and tie an apron at the waist!).
- If all else fails, and the kids are safely tucked away or the house is empty...ladies, get your "Pretty Woman" on and prop yourself up with nothing on but a pair of heels and one of his neck ties! Gentlemen, get your "Chippendale" on! LOL! (ummm...seriously though!).
- You can actually do some of the same things above...just keep it "G" rated!
- Write a note to your kids on the fridge or the bathroom mirror or tub wall.
- Have loving words on balloons for them too!
- Surprise them at school and eat lunch with them in the cafeteria (um...you can bring your own food!).
- Pick up a movie from the Red Box and a $5 pizza from Little Cesars and let them have a picnic in their room or on the family room floor while you and Big Daddy (or Mama) have your private dinner for two!
